A Male Ally Series
We tend to think of mentoring as a way for experienced business leaders to share their expertise and help their younger colleagues get ahead—but it can be much more than that. The most powerful form of mentoring is reciprocal mentoring, where both partners are sharing and learning.
Often, mentoring relationships develop between people who feel a natural connection or commonality. This means that we tend to form bonds with people who already look or think like us, which limits our opportunities for growth. Mentorship is more meaningful when it involves allyship with someone from a different background who may not have had the same opportunities—such as when men mentor women.
Reciprocal mentoring enables colleagues to connect across career levels and cultural differences. Both sides become more understanding, build trust, and develop stronger leadership and communication skills. In reciprocal mentoring relationships, people in positions of power become advocates and sponsors for their diverse colleagues, which in turn creates a more inclusive workplace.
In this webinar, you will:
- Learn the key behaviors of reciprocal mentoring
- Understand the mutual benefits of a reciprocal mentoring relationship
- Discover how reciprocal mentoring leads to allyships that can help disrupt historical power imbalances and create a more inclusive work environment
